ISLAND BUILDING FIGURES NEAR RECORD FIGURES!

December 12, 2014

Building figures for the Bay islands are at record figures.

Redland City Council has revealed to The Friendly Bay islander the official building figures for 2014.

With many of the figures only recently approved or still to be approved, it means a boost for the islands' building industry.

The total of building applications lodged to council and to private certifiers totals a stunning 184 for the Southern Moreton Bay Islands. Of this number, 173 have been approved by council, with the remainder to be approved most likely in the new year.

Coochiemudlo Island has had 15 building applications, with 13 decided in the affirmative.

North Stradbroke Island has had 54 building applications approved with 37 of those approved, and the remainder awaiting approval.

There have also been big numbers in relation to development applications involving material change of use, the reconfiguration of lots, building works assessable against the planning scheme or operational works.

In this category 147 have been lodged on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands with 168 decided.

On Coochiemudlo there have been five lodged and seven decided (left over from last year).

On North Stradbroke there have been 37 lodged and 51 decided (left over from last year).

Cr Mark Edwards said the figures lodged are impressive.

"It is good to see island home building on the increase. The figures are not as high as they were in the crazy years of a few years ago, but they are the best they have been for a number of year.

"A strong building industry means a stronger island economy," the councillor said.
