Macleay and Russell Island RSL sub branches have received a special ‘momento’ of the recent 100th anniversary of the Anzac Landings.

Managing editor Gerard Thompson has donated to each of the sub branches a special photograph mounted on canvas, to commemorate the anniversary.

At both the Macleay Island Dawn Service and the Russell Island main service, all attending returned soldiers and members of the respective RSL sub branches were invited to be part of a commemorative photograph taken in front of the island cenotaphs.

Both photographs appeared in the May edition of The Friendly Bay Islander.

The Friendly Bay Islander has had those photographs reproduced in larger form and mounted on a special canvas surface and frame.

“We wanted to provide a special memory for island sub branch members,” Gerard Thompson said.

Both canvas photographic mountings have been presented to the resptive RSL sub branch presidents, Russ Hearps of the Macleay Island RSL Sub Branch and Anthony Gleeson of the Russell Island RSL Sub Branch.

And both presidents were full of praise for the special commemorative gift.

“It is a great gesture and a lovely moment,” said a very pleased Russ Hearps.

“We are most appreciative of this special memory,” Anthony Gleeson added.

The Canvas mountings will be be displayed in respective RSL Sub Branch meeting places.
