HEALTHY & ACTIVE PROGRAM GAINING MOMENTUM

 

The Redlands Healthy and Active program introduced by Redland City Council is gaining momentum.

Children and adults are involved with the program on Russell Island, involving Kids’ Mini Games every Friday from 4pm at the Russell Island Sport and Recreation Park, being conducted by Glenn Colvill and Chris Cloherty. 

Beginners’ Yoga is also being staged on Wednesdays from 5.30pm in the Russell Island Recreation Hall.

Many are getting inspiration from two young islanders who are hitting the heights when it comes to outstanding levels of sporting achievement.

Zayah Morgan and Mara Stranskys are two young Russell Island girls who are inspiring others to ‘have a go’. 

Both girls have obtained the highest levels in their respective sports whilst still living on Russell Island. 

Mara Stransky is Australia’s top ranked woman sailor in the Laser class, and she has an excellent chance of being selected to represent Australia in sailing at the Olympic Games in Tokyo next summer. 

Zahah Morgan at just 13 years of age has already won a Queensland Junior Lawn Bowls Championship and has now been selected in the Queensland team to play against NSW in a series of games later in the year. 

Both girls are fine examples to the youth of the islands to get involved with sport

Islanders have every good reason to get involved with the program, or start a sport or fitness program themselves.

There are the council organised events, and islanders can also join up with people who take advantage of some of the other fitness programs on the islands.

These include joining the Gym with Roman on Russell Island, or joining up to the water aerobics classes run by Roman at the Russell Island swimming pool.

You can get exercise by learning to play golf at the Bay Islands Golf Club, forsaking the carts to walk and carry your clubs.

And what about playing bowls at the island bowls clubs at Club Macleay and at the Russell Island Bowls Club?

Those who wish to start a program to get fit, can do so by simply going for a daily walk.

You can start at any length of time daily, slowly increasing distance and tempo (cadence) as you improve.

There are many idyllic routes on our islands to enjoy these walks and to improve overall fitness.

 GETTING INVOLVED

Redland City Mayor, Karen Williams said hundreds of Redlanders have been getting out and getting active every week in one of the activities being offered by Council for free during the school term in the Redlands Healthy and Active Program.

“With some SMBI residents enjoying Yoga and Kid’s Mini Games on Russell Island, others have ventured to the mainland for activities in Victoria Point and Redland Bay.

“There’s been some really positive feedback, from people who’ve lost weight, as well as those who are enjoying the workouts and meeting new people.

In addition to the free classes, there is an Active Pop Ups program which will also be part of the Redlands Healthy and Active program and is designed specifically to assist local Sport & Recreation Clubs/Associations to deliver innovative, fun, flexible and social participation programs/activities specifically targeting school aged children 5-17 years of age.

Through the grant program we are offering Clubs/Associations up to $1000 per program for equipment and/or to engage qualified coaches/instructors to deliver these programs. For more information on this contact: 3829 8759 citysportvenues@redland.qld.gov.au
