A HEAVY HEART!

It is with a heavy heart that we write this months column. The island community is reeling after the loss of a loving husband, son, uncle, brother and loyal friend. All those who knew Billy Frost would testify to his generous nature, wicked sense of humour and dedication to family and friends. Our close-knit community continue to rally around Billy’s loved ones to offer support and share in the memories of a man who brought so much joy to all those that knew him. He will be dearly missed.

STRADDIE SALUTE TRIATHLON 2019

It’s back! After taking a hiatus last year, event organisers of the Straddie Salute Triathlon have planned a fantastic itinerary for 2019. We’re bringing these details to you early so you can lace up the sandshoes, polish the goggles and pump up the bike tyres to begin your training regime. The race will take place on Saturday 18 May 2019 at Point Lookout, and will see competitors of all ages and fitness levels attempt to complete a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and an 8km run. Entries are open for individuals or teams of two or three athletes. Road and off-road options are available and there is even a division for juniors who are expected to complete a 400m swim, 2km bike ride and a 400m run. For those of us who aren’t up to competing in a full triathlon, (yes, our hands are in the air), there is also an 8.5km fun run/walk organised. If you’re up for the challenge, you can enter online at www.active.com

 and search for ‘Straddie Salute’.

LATE FOR WOODSTOCK

Four musicians inspired by the rock legends from the 60’s and 70’s make up the band ‘Late For Woodstock’, who have spent the last 20 years bringing the classic sounds and images from this era to audiences around Australia. They are now coming to Straddie on 9 March 2019.  The Doors, Credence, Stones, Bob Dylan, Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd are just a few of the bands the boys will cover in their extensive catalogue. The North Stradbroke Island Golf Club will be hosting the event, which will kick off at 8pm. You can purchase tickets from the Dunwich Newsagency or direct from the Golf Club. So dust of your flares, bring out your inner hippie and enjoy the music of the 60’s and 70’s.

BUSHCARE NURSERY

The Stradbroke Bushcare Nursery at Headland Park on Kennedy Drive, Point Lookout, has new stock of popular island plants for sales from as little as $3 a plant.  They include Wild May (Leptospermum poygalifolium), the incredibly hardy Westringia fruiticosa and the equally hardy and heat and drought tolerant Native Mulberry (Pipturas argenteus). The nursery is open 10am to 12pm every Thursday and 8am to 12pm on market Sundays.

The Stradbroke Bushcare Nursery propagates and sells only plants native to the island, that thrive in sandy soils and salt laden winds. The nursery is always looking for volunteers to help run the nursery or participate in the regular working bees. For more information contact Judy Hines on 3409 8567.
