CLUB MACLEAY LAUDED AS ‘AUSTRALIA’S BEST’

Club Macleay and its new synthetic green has been lauded as ‘Australia’s Best’.

The high praise came from Redlands MP Kim Richards and Redland City Mayor Karen Williams at the recent official opening of the new synthetic green.

The club was packed for the luncheon event and the ribbon cutting.

The club’s management, new green and outstanding waterside location were the reasons why it was labelled ‘Australia’s Best’.

Funding for the project has been provided mostly by the State Government as well as Redland City Council with the club also having to make a significant contribution.

The cost of the major transition from natural grass to synthetic was $350,000.

Construction of the new surface was completed just prior to Christmas.

In detailing the history behind the move, club vice-president Rod Callaghan said the project was precipitated by an earlier happening that had ‘undermined’ the old green.

“Water from the foreshore had penetrated under the old surface and clearly its longevity was in jeopardy

“The earlier project by Redland City Council to construct a new footings and wall at a cost of $650,000 was the reason why the synthetic green work was able to be carried out,” he explained.

Club president Barry Reid thanked the Mayor, council and Cr Mark Edwards for their involvement and Redlands MP Kim Richards and the State Government for all helping to make it happen.

Other key figures and club management were also recognised for their efforts.

The point was made that the Club Macleay new synthetic surface is the only one of its type in the Redlands.
