RUSSELL ISLAND COMMUNITY RECEIVES MASSIVE BOOST via HENRY PIKE’S ELECTION BOWLS CLUB COMMITMENT
The Russell Island community are set to benefit from a stunning modern upgrade to the island’s Bowls Club should a Dutton Coalition Government be elected this year.
Announcing the commitment at the club’s recent Last Day on the Green event, the Federal Member for Bowman, Henry Pike MP, pledged $2.5 million towards a true community facility that would cater to all the needs of Russell Island’s residents and visitors.
“This beautiful island is growing rapidly. New investment is needed to meet these increasing needs.” Mr Pike said.
“Unfortunately, for too long Russell Island has been overlooked for critical infrastructure grants and development.”
“I’m delighted to announce this Coalition commitment of $2.5 million that will kickstart the stage 1 development of the Bowls Club and will ensure this community hub serves the Island well into the future.”
Since 1981, Russell Island’s Bowls Club has been a vital cornerstone of the tight-knit island community. As well as time spent on the green, the Club is also a venue for important social and cultural events.
Under a Dutton Coalition government, this commitment to the Club will go towards expanding the clubhouse as part of their stage 1 master plan, which will finally deliver Russell Island a community hub purpose-built for people of all ages to gather for sports, education, culture and social opportunities.
Mr Pike’s funding announcement comes after the Albanese Labor Government made the Southern Moreton Bay Islands ineligible for regional funding grants, which set many local projects back and was a bitter blow to many on the islands.
“This is something the community has really been crying out for,” Mr Pike said.
“It’s an honour to make this announcement today. Russell Island will no longer be forgotten. It will instead get the investment that the entire community deserves.”
The Russell Island Bowls Club has had plans for major extensions in play for many years.
The existing club was originally built for future expansion and to take a first floor on top of the current club facilities.
Island planner, Martyn Osborne, prepared plans for the club extensions way back in 2013.
The design takes the proposed new club up to street level with direct access from Jackson Road.
The design involves a central bar area surrounded on all sides by different areas of club activities such as dining, function area, bowls activities etc.
This leads out to a covered outdoor dining area that overlooks the greens below.
