CONCHITA IS REDLAND CITY DIVISION 5 BAY ISLAND 'INSPIRING SENIOR'

Well known Club Macleay secretary, Conchita Maulguet, has been recognised for her outstanding volunteer work and has been nominated Redland City's Division 5 'Inspiring Senior' for 2014.

Conchita was both surprised, proud and delighted when she was informed of her selection when The Friendly Bay Islander paid her a visit at Club Macleay.

Many know of Conchita's volunteer work as secretary, 'responsible' manager and gaming nominee at the famous bowls club that boasts one of the best views 'anywhere'.

All this work is voluntary.

What many do not know is that Conchita has been 'volunteering' for years on Macleay Island.

She arrived on our islands with husband Jean Claude 17 years ago, after Claude had retired with a career at Telstra.

The couple, with two young sons in tow, had migrated to Australia 42 years ago from London where they were married.

Originally born in Madrid, Spain, Conchita moved to the UK as a 14 year old.

"I can't stand being bored, so I became a volunteer," she told us.

She was for many years the only Frist Responder to the Ambulance Service and was on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week on Macleay Island.

She also raised funds to buy equipment for the island Ambulance Service.

Conchita played a huge role with Bay Island Bloomers inter-acting with many island ladies and making friends, whilst at the same time was a Blue Care volunteer.

Along the way the 'volunteeraholic' was also involved with Meals on Wheels and helping to provide breakfasts at the Macleay Island State School.

Today, Club Macleay takes up much of her time.

"I love it here at the club. The outlook is wonderful, the staff are great; I love meeting new people; it is a fantastic place to be," she said.

Conchita and other council area divisional winners will be recognised and rewarded at a special event to be held at the Tranquil Waters Retirement Village, Victoria Point, on Thursday, August 21.

Presentations will be made to the divisional winners by Redland City Council Mayor, Karen Williams.

Well done Conchita!
