SANDY BEACH REGATTA TO LAUNCH NEW SAILING AND KAYAK CLUB!

A Regatta is coming to Russell Island in November!

Our Place in the Sun Regatta Day is to be held at Sandy Beach on Sunday, November 17.

The Regatta is the brainchild of the Sandy Beach Sailing and Kayak Club via organisers Bob Turner and Steve Morgan.

The event is being held to help launch the Sandy Beach Sailing and Kayak Club at their preferred venue on the south eastern tip of Russell Island.

"We hope to have plenty of fun activities on the day, but what we are really after are islanders from all the islands to come and join the Sandy Beach Sailing and Kayak Club," Steve Morgan told The Friendly Bay Islander.

The day will start off with a Fun Run and Bike Ride from the Russell Island Jetty to Sandy Beach.

The fun run will start at 10.00am and the bike ride at 10.30am. Volunteer support will man the route.

At Sandy Beach both sailing and kayak races will be staged.

New members are encouraged to arrive at Sandy Beach to register to join the Club between 12.00 to 1.00pm.

"We want islanders from six to 90 to come along for a great day," Bob Turner added

Sailing races will start at 1pm and kayak races at 2pm.

Entry for events will be just $5.

The money for entries is going to the Wings of Hope organisation which provides funds for the safety of young girls and women in India, via the Bay Islands 7th Day Adventist Church.

It costs $180 per girl to save them from harm. Last year the church raised nearly $700 for Wings of Hope and it is hoped that this amount will be exceeded this year.

There will be food and drinks, entertainment, music and market stalls.

"Anyone who has a craft of any shape and size is invited to come along and enjoy the Big Open Regatta Day and we would love them to join the Sandy Beach Sailing and Kayak Club," Steve Morgan said.

The fledgling club has selected Sandy Beach as the preferred site for club activities, as announced in a recent edition of The Friendly Bay Islander.

It is hoped in the future some amenities will be provided in a perfect location with support camping facilities close by.

A special stall will be on location for the Regatta Day where memberships can be signed.

Bob Turner said: "The Sandy Beach Sailing and Kayak Club is designed for our island community to take full advantage of our island location and way of life.

"I encourage all islanders to come along on the day, join up, have fun and get involved," he said.

Entry forms at Canaipa Nursery and Bay Snippers.
