HOT GOSS DECEMBER

STAN'S THE MAN!

There is no doubt about it, Stan is the Man from Bay Air. We got to take advantage of Stanley Lewis' services a few days ago when an emergency flight was required. We were picked up and whisked to the airport in a little over 40 minutes, with Stan's team stopping off for us for a quick and necessary purchase along the way. Another lady decided she would rather save $14, catch a bus to Cleveland train station, catch a train to Roma Street, then catch a train to the airport - nearly three hours later!! You can't beat service and convenience, with a smile, too! By the way, Stanley recently celebrated his 60th birthday. Happy birthday and we believe a good time was had by all!

GRUMPY FERRY STAFF

By and large the team that operate our passenger ferries is fantastic. They are mostly friendly and helpful, but not all. Why aren't people who deal with the public taught just how important it is to 'smile' and be friendly, and helpful. After all, it goes with the job. A snarl and a scowl achieves absolutely nothing!

BUSINESS CHANGEOVER - GIVE THEM A CHANCE

It doesn't take long before the rumour mill starts working on the islands. Neha Shah and her team had only just taken over the former Foodworks (and now Five Star Supermarket) and, within one day, there were comments and criticisms about prices etc. All were inaccurate, as usual. Another rumour was that all the tenants at the Five Star site had been told to vacate - again not true. A name change was introduced, new discount prices introduced, as well as lower fuel prices for Macleay - hardly mentioned by the rumour mill!

DAVID WELLS AND CARRIE (WITH PIX)

Island artist David Wells made the long trek overseas to make a significant presentation to Hollywood actor Carrie Fisher. David came in for some high praise indeed at the glittering affair. It is no wonder his art is now being sought after right around the world. Clearly his efforts with the Duchess of Cambridge portrait have elevated his status as an artist. Perhaps more Hollywood work could be in the offering? Meanwhile, it is time for the Three Modern Masters at the Macleay Island Arts Complex, now on view!

ARMISTICE DAY SURPRISE AND THANKS!

Macleay island RSL secretary Sandy Freeleagus has expressed his thanks and surprise at the number of Islanders who turned up to the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Pat's Park Cenotaph on Armistice Day. "Considering it was a Tuesday and a working day, the number who gathered with our RSL Sub Branch was very heartening. May I offer special thanks to all those Islanders who contributed to the bucket for the Cenotaph maintenance appeal. We have been after the Council to maintain the Cenotaph for a number of years as they were responsible for it, but without result . When it became an almost impossible project, they transferred all maintenance to our Sub Branch. Our thanks to Bunnings at Victoria Point who cleaned and sealed the sandstone of the Cenotaph for us and presented us with pressure cleaning equipment for future use. We found that the Services' logos on the faces of the Cenotaph were severely eroded (almost unrecognisable) so we shopped around and were able to purchase three bronze plaques which have been secured in their appropriate positions. (Our sincere gratitude to George - our resident stone mason)."
