• The council plan for the car park extension

Macleay Island is to receive a bonus overflow car park area.
Cr Mark Edwards has been pushing for the ‘bonus’ car park for some time at council, and now it has been approved for immediate construction.
The overflow carpark area is in addition to the $6 million new foreshore car park that is scheduled to start as soon as State Government approvals are finalised.
Cr Edwards told The Friendly Bay Islander it had been ‘hoped’ work would have already started on the major $6 million project by this time.
“Unfortunately, we cannot hurry up the State Government approval processes.”
Fortunately, the overflow car park extensions have no such restrictions, with work to start almost immediately.
This area of car park will be extended to the existing small car park at the rear of the Southsea Terrace Shops off Brighton Road, which currently holds around 40 vehicles.
The extension will add a further 27 parking spaces.
It will later have an access road connection to the future foreshore car park.
Cr Edwards said the car park overflow would prove a huge bonus to Macleay Islanders and provide almost immediate car parking relief.
“Of course, the real relief will come when work starts on the foreshore car park, which will more than double existing car parking in the foreshore area,” the councillor.
“It is so frustrating considering that council is ready to go on the major foreshore parking project.
“The State Government approvals are the hold-up at the moment,” the councillor said.
