ISLAND RESIDENTS URGED TO USE RESILIENCE CENTRE AND SPORTING HUB

Residents of all the Bay Islands were urged to make use of the new Resilience Centre and sporting hub on Russell Island.

The Resilience Centre, which also doubles as a full sporting facility, was officially opened on Thursday, October 29, by Redland City Council Mayor Karen Williams with help from Federal Member for Bowman Andrew Laming and Cr Mark Edwards.

A gala day of activities was held in association with the opening that included a game of soccer between Macleay Island and Russell Island school teams, and a Rugby League training session.

The $1 million facility doubles as a full sporting hub with change rooms, toilets, kitchen and social amenities that can easily convert to a full island Resilience Centre in times of island crisis i.e. flood and fire threats.

The complex was praised by Mayor Williams, as well as Andrew Laming and Cr Mark Edwards.

It has been finished to the highest possible standards, with the social area sure to prove extremely popular with island groups and organisations.

It is supported by a superb full catering facility that also doubles as an event cafeteria.

Cr Mark Edwards urged island clubs and groups to take advantage of the facilities.

“They are here to be used and they are available to the residents and sporting groups from all the Bay Islands,” he said.

Mayor Karen Williams added “Together these community facilities will create a social hub that encourages healthy activity and fosters community networks by providing for a wide range of interests.”

The project is jointly funded by Council and the Commonwealth Government who both provided $500,000, following on from the $2 million joint Council and State Government sports fields that were opened right next door in October 2013.
