NEW YEARS ‘THE GATHERING’ AT POINT LOOKOUT, MINJERRIBAH

Ivy Smith is a community resident holding a Festival on North Stradbroke Island from Friday 30 December to Sunday 1 January, New Years’ Day.

The Festival will be held on the Point Lookout Oval, just over the road from the Pt Lookout Bowls Club.

The three-day event will comprise of a Cultural Village and a Mobile Museum that will tell the history of Minjerribah and the First Nations People, live music, DJ’s, local artists, workshops, live art and even a Kids’ Village including Farm Animals!

Ivy says her concept for The Gathering is about a ‘welcoming space for all cultures’.

“It is also about giving back to the community, showing young people how to lead, and community engagement for all.”

“I have a background in events organisation in New Zealand, and I want to bring those skills here to share them, to give back to the community I live in and showcase their rich and unique history.”

Ivy says that through many years of building relationships and trust with the community, alongside feedback from visitors, this has enabled her now to create an all age event promoting this islands history and culture. Adding that, this event has also encouraged other artists to collaborate their talents in creating this 3-day multi-cultural event.

The importance when holding events within the community is that it must be done with a high level of integrity, respect and accountability, which comes from community consultation. “The Gathering encompasses all of those ideals which engaged the community as a whole. All ages within the community are taking part, from those under 5 right through to our Community Elders”, Ivy said.

“The Gathering, being a drug and alcohol free event, creates a safe space for everyone to enjoy each other and take in the experience in a happy family friendly environment.”

Ivy admits to putting it all together on a ‘shoestring’ budget. “Some sponsorship would be very handy. I hope some businesses or groups can come forward with some help. It would be most appreciated.”

This is sure to be a draw card for the Islands’ tourism and Redlands community. A short 25 minute trip on the water taxi for the perfect family day out or a 3 day mini break if you are looking for something a little longer. It’s just a 45 minute trip from Brisbane CDB or 1 hour from Gold Coast.
