BUSHCARE PLANTING ON RUSSELL ISLAND MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Bushcare planting on Russell Island is definitely making a difference.

The island bushcare group has been selecting areas for additional bushcare planting, adding to some pristine island eco systems.

In recent times the group has been carrying out planting in Bayview Road Reserve, adjacent to Jock Kennedy Park.

One section was completed earlier this year adding plants that are designed to attract and feed the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo.

The most recent section is in the same area, extending the planting and its positive eco impact.

A group of volunteers turned up for the planting, aided by morning tea and some giveaways.

The day was managed by Alys Shilo, the Bushcare Extension Officer with Redland City Council’s Indigiscapes, with the help of island Bushcare helper Al Prestwood.

Al Prestwood said the plantings have been deliberately chosen for a purpose.

“The first garden in this section was planted to attract the Glossy Black Cockatoo to aid their continuing existence.

“This second garden contains rainforest plants that are suitable for the home garden.

“Island residents will be able to come and see these plants and understand what they might be able to add to their home garden landscape,” he told The Friendly Bay Islander.

Bushcare is a positive program working with great impact on our islands.

By being involved with Bushcare you can learn more about native species for your garden, understand local flora and fauna, and become associated with a positive island group.
