New Ferry Service Helps Students

After months of championing Translink to provide an additional ferry service to the Southern Moreton Bay Islands community, Member for Redlands, Matt McEachan MP has had a result.

‘Following repeated requests for a meeting with the Deputy Premier, I was finally afforded the opportunity to meet with Glen Butcher MP, Assistant Minister for Transport on Friday 16 June 2017,’ Mr McEachan said.

Students were having to leave school before the end of class to catch the ferry, missing out on one lesson every day and approximately 100 hours of teaching and learning in the school year. This posed a serious safety issue for the students forced to wait unsupervised at the terminal for the 3:55pm service. Translink were unprepared to make changes to reflect the need for an additional service.

‘As a direct result of advocating both locally and in Parliament for an additional service, I am pleased to report success. Translink have reconsidered their position and granted a 3:11pm ferry service for the SMBI community’.

The new service will be operational in Term Three, 2017 and will transport passengers between the islands.
