Council collaborates on Straddie domestic dog controls

Redland City Council is actively working with key agencies on a coordinated response to domestic dog attacks on North Stradbroke Island (Straddie) wildlife.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said that while it was disturbing to hear that Straddie wildlife was suffering at the hands of dog owners who were not constraining their pets, Council remained committed to a cross-agency solution to protect the natural and cultural values of the island.

“Although a minority land owner, Council acknowledges its critical role and has just this week taken part in a stakeholder meeting with QYAC, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services (QPWS), Queensland Department of Environment and Science (QDES), Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy (DNRME), SEQ Water and mine operator Sibelco.

“Some tangible actions have come out of this meeting, with participants hearing from QPWS rangers from Fraser Island, who are experienced at managing dingoes.

“Council is starting a 10-day domestic dog and fox trapping program today (Friday 9 March) to support QPWS trapping activities and is working with other agencies to investigate where the dogs involved in the attacks reside.”

Redland City Councillor for Division 2 Peter Mitchell said Council would also step up its education and awareness campaign, aimed primarily at island locals but also visitors, about the impacts of straying dogs on human safety and wildlife.

“An awareness-raising flyer is being developed for distribution to all Straddie residents and an accompanying poster will be placed at key island locations used by visitors and residents.

“Council is also exploring opportunities to work with ferry operators to distribute educational flyers specifically to dog owners heading over to Straddie,” Cr Mitchell said.
