MARGARET WANTS AN ISLAND ‘OBSERVATORY’ AND A FEW ‘FRIENDS’ FOR THE PINNACLE FARM PARK
Russell Island stalwart and long-time resident Margaret Broome is a woman on a mission!
Margaret has long owned and occupied one of the island’s most strategic properties, the Pinnacle Farm.
Since the farm became inactive for farm production, Margaret has had a vision for what remains of her property.
Whilst she still lives in her original family homestead nearby, she wanted the remainder to become a ‘public park for island family recreation’.
She went about ‘doing a deal’ with Redland City Council which saw her hand over much of the remains of her property for development of a recreational park.
The deal was ‘done’ and that has now become a reality.
Pinnacle Farm Park is located on open high ground at the eastern end of Russell Island on Canaipa Point Drive offering spectacular water and island views in all directions.
Margaret wants to see the park grounds developed into a wonderland of plants, flowers, bushes, trees, pathways and recreation spots to be enjoyed by islanders and visitors alike.
She also reckons a small ‘Observatory to the Stars’ could also be part of the Pinnacle Farm Park project.
However, she can’t do it without help, and that is why she would like to see a volunteer group come into being, called the ‘Friends of Pinnacle Farm Park’.
She has even produced a leaflet where she has stated she wants to form the FPFP group affiliated with other community groups to help develop the park with certain proposed features.
These would include:
• Perimeter path for joggers, walkers and cyclists, connecting to existing main road pathway;
• Children’s play area;
• BBQ area;
• Outdoor gym equipment beside pathways;
And perhaps later:
• Possible outdoor entertainment area for music and drama events;
• Construction of an appropriate ‘observatory’ for islanders to study the stars; and more.
“There are many people on our islands who like to volunteer, and a project such of this will add much to many people’s lives,” she said.
Margaret hopes to call an inaugural meeting soon when some intent from interested islanders is known.
