NEW FLAG POLES

MACLEAY RSL GETS NEW FLAG POLES

The Macleay Island cenotaph was emblazoned with flags for the recent Anzac Day Dawn services.

That was because two new flag poles had been erected at the beautiful remembrance site at Pat’s Park.

The Macleay Island RSL Sub Branch had long been in need of an additional flag pole.

RSL president Russ Hearps explains: “We have always needed three flag poles to properly fly the flags of both Australia and New Zealand for our Anzac and Remembrance Day services.

“It was not appropriate for one to be placed on top of another,” he told The Friendly Bay Islander.

The RSL asked for help from Redland City Council’s Division 5 Councillor Mark Edwards.

Cr Edwards was able to come up with the funding for two new poles and they were put in place only days before this year’s Anzac Services.

“We would like to thank Cr Edwards for his assistance.

“We are very proud of our Anzac and Remembrance services on our islands and now we can run them as they are supposed to be staged with the flags of our nations in the appropriate order,” Russ Hearps said.

Cr Edwards said: “I know how important it is to the sub branch and to our returned servicemen and women.

“I was also pleased to be able to attend the Macleay Island Dawn Service for the first time this year."
