WEINAM CREEK CAR PARKING PLAN REVEALED

In a major boost to the Southern Bay Islands, Redland City Council has revealed concept plans for the Weinam Creek car parking station.

The release of the plan is a huge relief for many islanders after much uncertainty brought about by the Moore’s Road car parking plans.

Division 5 Councillor Mark Edwards has been at pains to explain to islanders what will be the eventual parking outcome at Weinam Creek.

“I know there has been some uncertainty and confusion.

“The release of these concept plans for Weinam Creek, and specifically the car parking station, and its proximity to the terminal, is vital to islanders.

“Islanders and residents of Redland Bay need to know that the parking at Moore’s Road will mainly be in place during the construction process at Weinam Creek of the PDA area.

“On completion of the car parking station and retail complex near the terminal, much of the Moore’s Road parking will become redundant and some of that area may be utilised as playing fields.”

Cr Edwards emphasised that the image of the car parking on this page is concept only at this stage.

“The purpose of this design is to show islanders the close proximity of the car parking station.

“It’s final design could well be much larger than is shown here,” the councillor said.

He said council intends for the car parking station to hold around 2500 cars.

The final building could go as high as five stories with 500 cars per floor.

“The lower level will feature shops, offices and restaurants as part of the retail and commercial precinct.

“The retail area will further be enhanced in the buildings over the road from the multi-level car park complex.”

Cr Edwards said he wanted to emphasise that the designs at this stage are concept only.

“The car parking station footprint could end up being even larger than is shown here.

“What the release of these concept plans is intended to show is the close proximity of car parking to the Translink terminal and island ferries.”

He concluded: ‘I hope this eases the mind of many islanders.”
