ISLAND VOLUNTEERS RECOGNISED

ISLAND VOLUNTEERS RECOGNISED

Island volunteers across all services were recently recognised at a special event held at the Macleay Island Community Hall.

It was in the form of a ‘de-briefing’ following the recent water crisis on the islands.

Following the water outage on Macleay, Karragarra and Lamb islands last month, members of Council’s Disaster Management team met with community volunteers to thank them for their contribution and receive their feedback about Council’s response to the incident.

It was Cr Mark Edwards’ privilege to present certificates of appreciation to almost 50 volunteers from all the Southern Islands (including some who travelled from Russell Island to help) who played a key role in staffing the bottled water pick-up stations and delivered bottled water to residents unable to access the pick-up points.

The volunteers included Community Champions and members of the SES; Rural Fire Services from Macleay, Lamb and Karragarra islands; Macleay Island Local Ambulance Committee and Lamb Island Residents Association.

Their local knowledge is invaluable and we are grateful to have their assistance and feedback.
