AUSTRALIA DAY BIG BASH – Bay Islander of the Year Awards

Australia Day, Saturday January 2019 this year will be bigger than ever with a huge day of fun and family activities planned!

The island Australia Day awards will be presented at the big family fun day at Kennedy Farm on Russell Island in the area adjacent to the sports field and tennis courts.

Saturday January 26 this year will feature family fun events including ‘old time’ favourites - sack races, cricket and tennis, egg and spoon races, sporting competitions with awards, entertainment, craft activities and art displays.

Devonshire tea will be available and the popular markets to grab a bargain!

The day will start around 10am and conclude about 3pm and everyone is invited to attend.

Bring a picnic lunch, or purchase from the food stalls including sausage sizzle and lamb rolls. Barbecue facilities also available.

Nominations are now being called for these ‘Island specific’ Australia Day Bay Islander of the Year Awards.

The event has been formulated in recent years by Steve Morgan and Bob Turner in association with Cr Mark Edwards and The Friendly Bay Islander.

This year will see Cr Mark Edwards, The Friendly Bay Islander, BIMSARA and RICArts combine to offer a fantastic and free community event, MC’d by Steve Morgan.

MP Kim Richards will also be in attendance.

There are three categories to be recognised:

• Bay Islander of the Year

• Senior Bay Islander of the Year (60 years and over)

• Young Bay Islander of the Year (16 to 30 years)

The online survey for nominations is available from The Friendly Bay Islander website thefriendlybayislander.com

The awards are for those Bay Islanders best showing community spirit and involvement.

They will be presented at The Farm, Art House & Gallery, entry via Robert St, Russell Island on Saturday, January 26.

Australia Day presentations will be awarded by Cr Edwards at 1.00pm.

Cr Edwards is encouraging all islanders to come on over and get involved and to nominate worthy candidates for the awards!

• Australia Day is to celebrated at The Farm on Russell Island.
