NEW TOURISM OFFICE

NEW TOURISM OFFICE NOW LOCATED ON MACLEAY ISLAND

An official Tourism Information Centre is now located on Macleay Island.

To be known as the Macleay Island Tourism Information Centre the new tourism office is part of the extensive services that are located at the Bay Islands Community Centre office at the island’s community hall precinct.

The office is a cumulative effort between Redland City Council’s Redlands Tourism and the Bay Islands Community Centre.

Community Services manager for Macleay Island. Angela Collins, says the new office is part of her plan to develop a complete Neighbourhood Centre on the island.

The Community Service is already a long way down that path with it already playing a major role as a Centrelink information Centre and Medicare Kiosk.

Already the office handles some of the most enquiries of any satellite office in Queensland.

It is expected the same will apply with the new Macleay Island Tourism Information Centre.

The tourism information is being provided by way of Redland City Tourism and island locals involved in the industry.

Angela Collins says that local knowledge and general visitor information will be imparted with the help of eight ‘volunteers’.

“The volunteers have already undergone extensive training, as is the case with the other Centrelink and Medicare services that are now located in this office,” Angela told The Friendly Bay Islander.

Such is the growth of the services at Bay Island Community Centre office, that the Medicare office may soon be elevated to ‘agency’ status.

As a tourism office, it is hoped that a new entry door may soon be installed and the blue tourism i installed on the building.

The new Macleay Island Tourism Information Centre will be able to handle all Redlands Tourism information including all information about our islands.

Cr Mark Edwards says the new tourism office is a major step forward for island tourism.

“With new jetties coming and major changes at Weinam Creek, it all adds up to major infrastructure improvements that will boost island visitation.”
