RUSSELL ISLAND STATE SCHOOL COMPLETELY REVAMPED AFTER ANOTHER $9 MILLION WORKS PROGRAM
The Russell Island State School is in the process of being ‘totally renewed’.
A current $9 million capital works program, funded by the Miles State Labor Government, is seeing the island school totally transformed.
The current works, rapidly nearly completion, involve the building of eight new classrooms, library and computer industries facilities.
The work is being carried out by the Fleetwood group, providing a huge impetus to island business during construction.
According to Redlands MP Kim Richards, the new school complex is ‘significant’ on a number of levels.
“Firstly, this additional $9 million expenditure follows on from the initial infrastructure additions about 18 months ago.
“Those earlier works involved new classrooms for early learning, preparatory schooling and Grade 1 classes.
“The current, more expansive, work will completely replace all previous school structures.
“On completion of the current build, these older buildings will be removed and new central communal areas will be developed,”
Kim Richards says the Russell Island State School will essentially be a totally new school, which was happened around 107 years after the school was originally founded.
The MP says the new building structure is ‘significant’ for a couple of other reasons.
• The new school building is now the ‘tallest building structure’ on the entire island group;
• The new building also contains the islands’ first internal ‘lift’.
It is expected the new school amenities could be completed in time for the last term of 2024.
