BETTER ISLAND BUSINESS

BETTER BUSINESS AND STORIES AUGUST 2023

ISLAND INDUSTRIAL SERVICES Island Industrial Services are growing their services considerably on our islands. Island businessman, Michael Clout, is the man with the vision behind the venture. Michael started his Industrial Services enterprise nearly 18 months when he introduced his mobile crane service under the auspices of Island Industrial Services. In recent times, Michael has developed an industrial block on the island and is rapidly turning it into an active metal supply outlet for the islands. Michael and Island Industrial Services has also introduced a truck hire service with a 5 tonne capacity, an all terrain forklift to go with his terrific crane service. As you will see from his x2 pages in this edition, he has plenty happening. To find out more, give Michael Clout a call on 0438 777 726. RUSSELL ISLAND DENTURE CLINIC The Russell Island Dental Clinic has long been associated with our islands. They have their own main street clinic located at 69 High Street Russell Island. The clinic offers full denture services including new dentures, relines and repairs. They are also linked to HICVAPS, catering to all health funds, including DVA and Q-Health Prosthodontic vouchers. Give them a call on 3409 1965. YOUR ISLAND MARKET PLACE One of the great places to visit on our islands is Your Island Market Place at 25 High Central Road. Sometimes known as Willow and Oak the complex is a lovely boutique area of eclectic businesses. It’s a great place to enjoy a coffee or a meal at the Kopasz & Curly Cafe. There are great home gifts on display and for sale at Porto Home and Gifts, with a hair cut option thanks to Adele the Barber. Racka meat and biltong is popular and The Hatch Art Pop Up Space Macleay Island always has some interesting displays of art and bric-a-brac and is available to hire for display purposes. Anne Webber of Macleay Island Property Agents is based in the complex, and is recognised for listing and selling some of the islands’ best properties. it is all at 25 High Central Road, Macleay Island. BAY ISLANDS COLLECTIVE SETS UP REDLAND BAY STORE Island skills and inventiveness have gone ‘commercial’ with the opening of a clever store in Redland Bay. The shop features an array of items that are either sourced or made on the SMB Islands. It is the brainchild of The Bay Islands Collective. The Collective and the store came about when Russell Island duo Anna and Jera Alexander saw the need to provide a space where the island communities could share their works, wares and talents, not only to our neighbouring islands, but also to the Bayside and Redlands residents and visitors. So they took over the space at the Banana Street shop that once used to be a bike shop, and next door to the take away food shop. The Bay Islands Collective store showcases artists, entrepreneurs and creatives. “80% of our vendors are islanders, but we do accept non-Island talent to ensure we get a wide mix and variety of offerings in-store.”Alex told The Friendly Bay islander, The Collective believe the potential for these island artists and creators is enormous. But there just isn’t enough of a “market” on the islands and not enough visiting the islands and attending our small local markets, so that’s why they have made the move to the new show at 47a Banana St, Redland Bay, in the same building as the takeaway food shop. They have plans in the future to offer the space for workshops - think paint and sip classes and mini market mornings where vendors can come with a gazebo and table and set up. Call in and check it out!

Do you think of ‘I and Me’ or ‘Us and We’? Like the islands that we commute to and fro from so we do the same in relationships. Think of a team. Each person is a player, but take away a player and the team does not function so well; or an orchestra. Each individual is a musician but if one person is absent the symphony doesn’t sound complete. We need each other to be ‘true to ourselves’. We need to give each other the space to grow to exercise diversity, exchange ideas, openness, dignity, healing and inclusion. The thing we need the most is each other. Just like the Captain or Deckie on the ferries we all need to support each other for ‘No person is an island, entire of itself’. I hope you get a chance to commute this month to enjoy Ekka, your island Chaplain, Kiti –Text 0400 463 443 500 TURN OUT FOR FIRST BIG NIGHT OF MOONLIGHT MOVIE EVENT The very first Moonlight Movies on Macleay event went off with a bang! Around 500 people came along to the two sessions on July 8th and enjoyed the free, open-air entertainment and festivities. “We were ecstatic about how well this event was received and supported by the community”, volunteer event coordinator Marieke Janssen said. “Everyone really got behind it – from the visitors, local businesses and organisations through to the army of volunteers – to make it a huge success”. “This is just the beginning!” exclaimed Ms. Janssen, “We have two more Moonlight Movies on Macleay events coming up on August 12th and September 30th. With two more fantastic films to be screened on August 12th – Encanto and The Lost City – plus live performances from Paul Schreuder and HC Berg, it will be another jam-packed event. A full complement of kids’ activities will be provided again, with the addition of a dedicated youth chill space for the teen attendees. Registrations are essential due to venue capacity limits, and organisers encourage you to get in quickly as both previous sessions booked out for the last event.
