$1 MILLION RUSSELL ISLAND BARGE RAMP JETTY TO BE INSTALLED AT WAHINE DRIVE !
Russell Island boat owners are soon to get a $1 million mooring jetty for the island boat ramp at Wahine Drive.
It will match the mooring jetty that has been installed on Macleay Island.
Russell Island boat owners have been clamoring for a mooring jetty due to problems associated with safely handling runabouts in and out of the water on the island.
A recent survey of boat owners on Russell Island revealed some of the many problems that boat owners have when handling craft.
Varying winds and currents can have a huge impact when handling various types of vessels.
One boat owner told The Friendly Bay Islander: “I recently had an incident when trying to launch my tinnie when another boat that was being ‘collected’ hit the side of my car.
“It would not have happened if that boat owner had been able to tie up his craft whilst collecting his vehicle.”
A recent incident on Karragarra Island barge ramp has also resulted in calls for mooring jetty at that island location as well.
Macleay Island received its morring jetty at the car park boat ramp, not long after the new island jetty had been constructed.
It was a ‘promise’ that was made by the Queensland Government at the time.
Redlands MP Kim Richards has advised that Russell Island has not been ‘forgotten’.
“$1 million has been set aside to build a similar mooring jetty adjacent to the boat ramp at Wahine Drive,” she told The Friendly Bay Islander.
It is believed that the Wahine Drive boat ramp has been selected because of it being ‘central’ to boat owners at eiither end of the island.
Kim Richards said that she was ‘working hard’ for funding to provide a similar mooring jetty to Lamb Island as well.
