BOB TURNER A MAN ON A MISSION FOR BETTER ISLAND PLANNING RESULTS
Well known Russell Island artist and architect, Bob Turner, is a man on a mission.
He is determined for planners to sit up and take notice and to consider some exciting possibilities for island foreshores.
He has long believed that anything close to the water should take advantage of the water.
“Having cars parked in prime water view spaces is not good planning,” Bob Turner says.
He recently came up with a concept for an historical element to the new foreshore that is to come on Russell Island after the new jetty goes into place later 2022.
Now he has gone even further, and has designed a format that is extensive and imaginative which just happens to include a multi-level car park with an overlooking high deck restaurant/cafe.
Bob has submitted his ideas to Redland City Council and he is hopeful they will be considered by council planners.
His suggestions include:
1. Unlimited multi-level car parking
2. Fast access from car park and drop-off area to the ferry
3. Separate barge on an off traffic
4. No dangerous pedestrian crossings to car park 2. This area to be returned to park land.
5. Overhead undercover lifts, stairs and walkway
6. Viewing and observation deck included that could also be a cafe/restaurant area/
7. Adequate disabled parking.
8. South Bank walk to include Memory Lane of island history and past families.
9. Mangrove boardwalk, fishing and visitor boat tie up jetty.
10. Above all this area should be one that all Russell Island would be proud of; not just a car park.
Bob’s concepts and plans have been submitted to Division 5 Councillor Mark Edwards.
“I have taken this submission seriously. Bob Turner certainly does have the community’s interest at heart and his plans are imaginative and deserve consideration.
“I have submitted them to council officers and I believe they will be part of a community consultation process.
“There has been considerable consultation in the ferry jetty design process, and the island car park and amenities I am confident they will be subject to a similar consultation,” Cr Edwards added.
