• LIGHT UP MY ISLAND LANTERN FESTIVAL. The Resilience Hub, 2 Union St, Russell Island on Saturday, June 19 from 3-9pm. The Bay Island Multi Sport and Recreation Association (BIMSARA) will host the event with food stalls, market stalls and demonstrations by various sporting groups in what promises to be a showcase of what the islands have to offer. • DJ VINCE’S NIGHTS TO REMEMBER - With DJ Vince Galea. This is a combination of show; introduction, entertainment, and then dancing the night away. To be held on the last Friday of each month. The themes of the nights will be Johnny Cash on Friday June 25, Kenny Rogers theme on Friday July 30 and Joe Cocker show on Friday August 27. It is only $5 per person entry and you can book a table for you and your friends by pre-booking, and ringing Vince on 0467 485 368. Food available via Deb’s Cafe. DJ VINCE PRACTICE SINGALONGS - prior to holding his monthly entertainment down at the Russell Hall, DJ Vince will be doing his practice sessions at the Community Centre on Jackson Road each 1st and 4th Monday of the month from 1 to 3pm. Come along (free) and dance or sing-a-long to their practice performance. Lamb Island Craft Group - 9am to 12pm Tuesdays. LIRA building near Progress Hall. All welcome for good company and a cuppa. OLD- FASHIONED SINGALONG! “You must remember this!” The old- fashioned Singalong is back and it’s FREE! The “Island Voices” is bringing to Island seniors a monthly Singalong. Don’t be shy - come along and sing your favourites from the British Isles, USA, Europe, Australia and from musicals. Haven’t sung in years? Can’t remember the words? Words of all songs will be provided. Local guest performers will sing some golden oldies too. Accomplished pianist, Sandy Kirby, will be “tinkling the ivories” and the Singalong will be hosted by former concert Tenor, Phil Goldfinch. • BERNIE'S MARKET 3rd Saturday of the Month at Macleay Island Progress Hall from 8.30 to 12.30. Once we are back to normal I will keep you up to date with our functions and events. • COAST CAREERS EXPO Businesses are invited to be part of the free expo to be held on Friday 4 June, 9am-6pm, at Alexandra Hills Hotel Conference Centre. Residents of all ages, from school students to those looking for a career pivot or study options, will be able to discover new opportunities at the expo. More information at the Redlands Coast website. • B.I.COMMUNITY SERVICES MARKETS - Russell Island markets held at the Bay Islands Community Service Inc in 55 Jackson Road on the first Saturday of every month, from 8.30am to 11.30am. For further information please contact Susan on 3409 1818 or Bay Island Community Services 8409 1177. • MIAC ART CLASSES - Life Drawing Class on Friday 7th May at 10am to 12 noon. The cost is $10 for members $15 for non members; Tuesdays with Noeline Webb will be starting again in mid May, Please contact MIAC for further details. A 4-week BEGINNERS’ course is now available with 3 hour lessons to offer a practical introduction to the techniques of drawing and painting. Materials and paints included. This will be held on Sunday 6th June to Sunday 27th June 9am to 12 md. With new works of art available for sale from local island artists, purchases can be taken immediately and will be replaced with more wonderful pieces. Rosie’s Island Beans Coffee is open most mornings so come along and enjoy cuppa and a lovely day on the island amidst the avocado trees. • RICARTS Artists have been invited to exhibit and sell their works together with other island and mainland art groups at an exciting new art space at The Grand View Hotel, Cleveland. The opening night for the first exhibition was Friday night, 28 May 2021 at The Grand View Hotel, Cleveland. Everyone is welcome to come along and experience this wonderful new venue to simply look or to buy some unique art pieces. Sold artwork will be replaced by new works. The exhibition will be ongoing, running for three months with a complete change-over every four months. • RICARTS Garden Art Competition and Springtime Art Exhibition - is on the horizon so save the date. Opening night will be Friday 8 October at The Farm, Arthouse & Gallery with Harvest Fare under the stars. Further details will be available in coming months – but it’s time to think about your spring garden and your garden art. • CLUB MACLEAY $1 CLUB BOWLS PROMOTION “For less than one dollar a week, patrons can now sign up and become bowling members.” The $1 a week offer is revolutionary in the Queensland Bowls Club sector, opening the door to many islanders getting involved in the sport in a positive and affordable way. • BAY ISLANDS COMMUNITY CENTRE MACLEAY ISLAND MARKETS - Markets are held at the Macleay Island Community Centre markets every Saturday morning. The Coffee Shop is open every working day and Saturday mornings. • MACLEAY ISLAND TOURISM CENTRE - The Tourism Centre office is now open at the Macleay Island Community Hall complex. SPORTS ROUNDUP • SOCCER - What a difference a season makes and of course playing the same age groups. Our under 8`s Turtles and under 9`s Curlews have started well in their new uniform. As we can not post results until the under 12`s you just have to come watch for yourself the improvement of this group of young footballers. Home games in June are Saturday 5th & 19th on the Russell Island sports oval. With the School holidays just be the one in July on the 24th. Also looking ahead to October seniors month. We are looking at doing Russell verses Islands game, calling it Seniors Sons & Daughters, so watch this space if you keen for a run out. Updates always on our facebook page: bayislandsunitedfc

• LADIES GOLF REPORT - Due to the wet weather early April the Ladies Monthly medal was eventually played on the 27th April. The winner Gail Spann with 72, Runner up Barb Garvey with 74. May monthly medal won by Gaye Sandy with 67 Runner up once again Barb Garvey with 68. These events were sponsored by B.I.G.C. This year “Happy Hooker Day” was held in May and sponsored by our one and only Fay Hooker. As every year this is a great fun day, the ladies dress up in costumes to make it a fun day and this year was no exception great job to the ladies who went to the trouble. A Big Thank You goes to Fay , Lyn and Zan (Mother superior in her Nun's costume). For all their work. The Winners Nigel McLachlan/Emma Maume Runner’s up Lenny Waldorf and Kev Llyod. A BIG THANK YOU TO Lyn Robertson the outgoing ladies captain for a fantastic job over the hardest time having to negotiate around the COVID she did a wonderful job, as always. Lyn will also be there to help myself negotiate the job as ladies captain for the coming year. Congratulations to Moya Fox for becoming our next treasurer and Lyn Robinson as a committee member. Congratulations to Les & Jeff for becoming life members, well deserved. Thank you to all the committee members for a job well done for 2020-21. Good luck to the new committee. Thanks Rhonda Chapman

• CAPTAIN’ BAY ISLANDS GOLF CLUB REPORT - Well here I am another AGM and another year as the Club Captain and looking forward to it. The last year was a good year for the club considering Covid and this year looks like another. I am pleased to say that we have two new members to be honoured with life membership, that being Jeff Arndt and Les Dower. Congratulations to Jeff and Les a well deserved honour for all the time and effort that they have both contributed to the care and condition of the course over many years. Saturday 24th April we played a stroke event and the mens winner was L. Fleming with a nett 64 and the runner up on a C/B was L. Fabian with a nett 64. The ladies winner was C. Alfonso with a nett 72 and the runner up on a C/B was R. Chapman with a nett 72. Congratulations to Rhonda Chapman who has taken on the role as Ladies captain and thank you to Lyn Robertson for a job well done as Ladies Captain for the past year and I am happy to say that we are not losing Lyns talents as she is staying on as a member of the committee. The 28th April we played a 2BBB Stableford and the winners were R. Corbett and S. Fujomoto with a 43 points and the runner ups were I. Gilleard and P. Turner on a C/B with 43 points. 1st May was the men's monthly medal and a stroke event with the A Grade winner being K. Leonard with a nett 67 and the runner up J. Burnitt with a nett 72. The B Grade and overall winner was G. Cain with a nett 64 and the runner up was W. Burnitt with a nett 69. The C Grade winner was C. Marshall with a nett 65 and the runner up was my trusty and valued Vice Captain Ray Noy with a nett 68. The 5th May was a single stableford and saw everyone drenched after 9 holes and the competition cancelled. 8th May was a 2BBB Stroke event and the winners were L. Petersen and N. McLachlan with a nett 57 and the runner ups were S. Fujimoto and C. Marshall with 61 nett. 12th May was a 2BBB stableford event and the winners were L. Fabian and D. Sandy with 41 points and the runner ups were J. McMorrow and N. McLachlan with 40 points. 15th May was a Stableford event and the mens winner was N. McLachlan with 37 points and the runner up on a C/B was L. Fabian with 37 points. The ladies winner was J. McAntee with 30 points and the runner up B. Garvey with 29 points. The 19th May was a Stableford event and the mens winner was K. Lloyd with 36 points and the runner up was I. Gilleard with 35 points. The ladies winner was C. Durand with 32 points and the runner up was Moya Fox on 31. Moya is our new treasurer this year and we welcome her to the position with her wealth of knowledge as well as everyone else that is new to the committee.
