COMING EVENTS SEPTEMBER 2022



• QLD AMBULANCE SERVICE OPEN DAY Macleay Island will be holding an Open Day at the Emergency Services Centre, High Central Rd, Macleay Island. Saturday 10 September 2022 from 10am – 3pm. Displays from all Emergency Services, historical QAS display, CPR Awareness and Snakes Alive! snake bite first aid sessions, sausage sizzle, free cake and coffee, school colouring competition winners announced, major raffle draw. ‘LOVE OUR ISLANDS’ CHILDREN’S ART EXHIBITION will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September 17 and 18. It is an invitation to attend the ‘Love Our Islands’ children’s art exhibition to be held at the Macleay Island Community Centre from 12 noon to 4pm on both days.


• ART MY WORD EXHIBITION Macleay Island Community Library – 30 Sept to 3 Oct. Evening cocktail event on 30 Sept (tickets need to be purchased via EventBrite), and running Sat-Mon 10am to 3pm over the long weekend as part of the Tide Festival. This event is a keenly interesting exhibition, with free entry held at the Macleay Island Progress Hall 26 Russell Terrace. Picnic and Awards Ceremony 2pm. Entries will be displayed on Sat 1 Oct, and families are invited to come along, picnic on the new Progress Hall lawns, and join us for the 2pm Awards Ceremony. Author Talk and Petite Champagne Breakfast. 2 Oct With a book launch, two local authors and free tickets (via the library), this event celebrates the creativity of writers artmyword@gmail.com



• SENIORS MONTH OCTOBER Events and activities on Redlands Coast during Seniors Month: Redland District Committee on the Ageing will host a one-stop community expo for seniors; Bay Islands Community Services will video older residents telling their stories and host a morning tea for the community to listen; Bay Islands Multi-Sport and Recreation Association will provide a seniors high tea event to be held with the Seaview Markets; STAR Community Services will run an information session to assist older adults in choosing and accessing their aged care service options with confidence. • SELF DEFENCE CLASSES Tai Chi exercises with basic self defence techniques. Students learn how to protect themselves by moving their bodies and holding items such as pens pencils rolled papers and flyers. Instructor John Combe will be teaching self defence movements for females in domestic violence and rape crises. To be held at Marian T’s RedShed Studio and dojo, Russell Island. Classes: Wednesday 12.30pm Thai Chi flowing self defence; Wednesday 5pm Wadi Ryu martial arts self defence; Thursday 5pm Wadi Ryu martial arts self defence. Costs: $10 all ages and abilities. • RUSSELL ISLAND COMMUNITY ARTS (RICArts) – A community-based organisation offering Art, Pottery, Ukulele, Sewing, Mosaic and Craft sessions from Monday to Friday 9.30am - 12.30pm. Weekday sessions $5 to attend – including morning tea. Yearly membership only $25 or $20 Concession. All welcome! Come along and see what we have to offer you. • Canaipa Connections Exhibition continues @ The Farm, Arthouse & Gallery, Robert Street, Canaipa (Russell Island) through to October 4. Canaipa Connections is a collective of artists each of whom has some connection with Canaipa (Russell Island) and has taken part in regular artists retreats on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island). The works in the exhibition have been developed at or inspired by the artist retreats.

• RICArts is proud to once again present the Heilet Steyn Exhibition opening Friday 21 October and running through till 16 November. All welcome to the opening evening from 5.30pm. BYO drinks and a plate of nibbles to share.

• Robyn Joargenson’s Exhibition commences at The Farm, Arthouse & Gallery on Friday 18 November through to 30 November and promises to be a very interesting mix of 2D and 3D art.

• RICArts will be rounding out the year with our final Members’ Exhibition from 2 December through till 8 January 2023. This exhibition includes members’ artworks in all forms and incorporates our popular $50 and under sale. Keep this one in mind for your wonderful local Christmas gifts.

• BINGO RUSSELL ISLAND The popular activity is now being played twice a week at the Bay Islands Community Services Hall at 55 Jackson Road. Bingo is played on Friday mornings from 10am to 12.30pm. If you wish to know more, please contact Carmela on 0407 599 746.


• MUGS - Macleay Is Ukulele Group. Music for community and personal benefit to reduce possible onset of Alzheimer's, to have fun and learn an instrument. Macleay Progress Hall,

• JUSTICE OF THE PEACE - A Justice of the Peace (JP) is now available at Macleay Island Community Library on Fridays from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon.


BICS COUNSELLOR - Meet Jenny our organisations counsellor. Jenny is a Psychotherapist with vast experience in a broad range of counselling requirements. Fortnightly on a Wed from 11:00am—2:00pm available on Macleay and Russell. For bookings ring 3409 1177.


• Lamb Island Craft Group - 9am to 12pm Tuesdays. LIRA building near Progress Hall. All welcome for good company and a cuppa.

• MACLEAY ISLAND TOURISM CENTRE - The Tourism Centre office is now open at the Macleay Island Community Hall complex. It is open 5 days a week.


• LIONS CLUB COMMUNITY MARKETS are held at the Macleay Island Community Centre on the first Saturday of each month.
