COMMUNITY LIBRARY

MACLEAY ISLAND COMMUNITY LIBRARY HAS A RICH ISLAND HISTORY

The Macleay Island Community Library (MICL) has a rich history beginning in 1986.

The library building was donated to the Macleay Island Progress Association (MIPA) by the Redland Shire Council (now RCC) in 2005.

Initially, 80% of the books in the library were donated by the island's residents. These donations have included many favoured authors creating a collection that is deeply connected to the community. The library still accepts book donations from the community.

MICL serves as a vital social hub for the community providing a place for people to connect, share their stories, and discuss their interests.

The library works under the auspices of the Macleay Island Progress Association and is supported by the Redland City Council who provides books and resources throughout the year.

The library is run by a team of volunteers who always greet with a smile and a friendly hello.

The volunteers have fundraising events throughout the year culminating in the Springtime Raffle. Money raised goes towards expanding the library catalogue with current books for island borrowers.

Our volunteers enjoy the environment, social interaction and sense of contribution working at the library provides. Volunteers sort, catalogue, cover and shelve books and assist in managing the library’s online catalogue system. If you would like to become a volunteer contact the library or call in and fill out one of our volunteer forms.

Members of RCC libraries can order books from the mainland which are then delivered to Macleay Island. Members are then advised when the books are available for pickup and then return the books to RCC libraries when they are due back.

The Macleay library also provides a photocopying, scanning, printing, and laminating services. However, large printing jobs are not possible.

A computer with internet connection and free Wi Fi is also available for community use.

Justice of the Peace services are available every Friday from 10.00am to 12.00pm. Bookings are not required.

The Book club meets the last Thursday of the month. Numbers are limited and bookings are required. Ring the library to enquire about vacancies.

Story Time for 2- to 5-year-olds is held on Thursdays from 10:30am to 12.00pm. Children enjoy stories, videos, songs and craft activity with a special theme on the day. Bookings are not required however a phone call to confirm the program on the day is a good idea.

There is also a Street library outside the library for book donations and borrowing where the community can take books, read and return as they please.

Library hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 9.00am to 4.00pm, Friday and Saturday, 9.00am to 12.00pm. The library is closed on Wednesday and Sunday.

The library catalogue can be searched at https://macleayislandcommunitylibrary.goddaddysites.com/

For more information visit the Macleay Island Library at 26 – 30 Russell Tce, Macleay Island or phone 3409 4243 during operating hours.
