MAJOR POWER NETWORK UPGRADE FOR SOUTHERN BAY ISLANDS

Energex has reinforced the power supply to more than 3000 homes and businesses on Russell, Lamb, Macleay, and Karragarra Islands.

This has occurred thanks to a significant network upgrade that was conducted in late August and required a significant island power shutdown.

More than 20 Energex crews in a convoy of trucks descended on the islands to carry out a comprehensive one-day project aimed at bolstering power reliability in preparation for the upcoming summer storm season.

The upgrade involved the replacement of many uninsulated 11,000-volt powerlines with insulated ones across the electrical backbone of the islands.

According to Energex’s Cleveland Work Group Leader Ryan Tuivaiti, the crucial upgrade will significantly enhance the stability and safety of the power supply across the Southern Bay Islands.

“We are committed to ensuring that residents and businesses on the islands and these new insulated lines will provide a network more resistant to outages caused by tree branches and other debris contacting them,” Mr Tuivaiti said.

The work was expected to be completed in a single day with power outages required between 8am and 3pm on the day.

Crews were required to worki on local roads and footpaths, and for the safety of motorists and pedestrians, traffic control teams were in place to manage traffic flows.
