Kerbside green waste collection

Kerbside collections, for green waste only, will begin from Monday 17 March 2025 to help residents unable to clear green waste generated from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred,

Place your green waste on the kerbside, away from electrical boxes, by the evening of Sunday 16 March.

Cut your green waste to sizes and weights that can be moved by two people.

Only disaster-related waste from inside and immediately outside the home is being prioritised at the moment. Green waste from other areas of your residence or prior to the event should be separated and processed as normal within existing waste centres.

Green waste removal support

We understand that cleaning up after the cyclone is a big job, and for some in our community, it’s just too much to handle alone. If you have mobility or health issues, or don’t have the right equipment to clear fallen trees, large branches, palm fronds, and other vegetation from around your home, you can register for support.

How it works: Register your job with Council below and based on the details provided, we will prioritise jobs and allocate resources where they are needed most. Demand is currently high, and while we’re working as quickly as possible, not all requests will be actioned immediately. Jobs will be prioritised based on urgency, safety risks and community impact.

This service is for green waste only. Remember you can only register for support with disaster-related waste from inside and immediately outside the home.

For more information and to register, go here: https://www.redland.qld.gov.au/recovery

Surplus food waste / highly odorous waste disposal (closes end of the day on Sunday 16 March)

Kerbside collection services

Scheduled kerbside bin collections have resumed and will continue to operate as per Council’s usual schedule. Check your bin day for when to put your bin out: www.redland.qld.gov.au/info/20188/bins_and_collections/781/bin_collection_day

Please note that there will be no separate clean-up collection from the verge outside properties. Please do not leave loose waste out on your kerbside. Only waste in your bins will be collected.

What to do with your sandbags

Uncontaminated sandbags (including sandbags that have come into contact with rain water or clean rain water run-off)

  • Do not place in kerbside bins. They are too heavy and may damage the bin or waste trucks.

  • Keep for future use. Dry out and store in a cool, covered area out of direct sunlight. Sandbags can last up to 12 months.

  • If unable to be stored, sand can be scattered on lawns, pavers topped up or place sand in sandpits. Some bags may contain higher levels of salt or contain some rocks, so please be mindful of where sand is placed. Please keep out of stormwater drains. Empty sandbags can be placed in general waste bins.

  • Please avoid taking uncontaminated sandbags to Recycling and Waste Centres.

Contaminated sandbags (including sandbags that have come in contact with floodwater or sewerage overflow)

  • Sandbags that have been in contact with floodwater or sewerage overflow are no longer usable.

  • Hazardous materials such as chemicals, oils or sewage are often present in floodwaters and these sandbags must be disposed of properly at Recycling and Waste Centres, when visitation numbers reduce, to protect both public health and the environment.

  • For personal safety, it is important to wear sturdy gloves when handling wet sandbags, and do not leave them lying around or scatter the sand on lawns, gardens, parks, or beaches.
