KAYLENE HIGGS

RUSSELL ISLAND ARTIST KAYLENE HIGGS WINS MAJOR 2024 QUEENSLAND REGIONAL ART AWARD

On 14 December 2024, Kaylene Higgs received the Queensland Regional Arts Awards (QRAA) People’s Choice Award (adult) at a gala event in Brisbane.

QRAA has the country’s largest regional arts award prize pool of over $140,000 making it a highly distinguished award for established and emerging regional Queenslanders.

The theme of the 2024 QRAA was “Resolution” with Kaylene Higgs’ glass fusion artwork “Under One Sun”.

Thanks to my network of supporters in the Redlands and across the Queensland, my work “Under One Sun” won the adult People’s Choice Award” said Russell Island based glass artist Kaylene Higgs.

“This is the first time I have entered such a prestigious exhibition, and I am so humbled to have had my work acknowledged by the community when there were so many other amazing pieces.

“This award gives me motivation to continue and expand my 20-year love affair of working with kiln formed glass from my Russell Island based Sandy Beach Studio” said Kaylene.

Kaylene’s art piece is on exhibition with category finalists, highly commended and winning artists at 33 Charlotte Street Brisbane for the past few weeks.

Kaylene will receive a non-acquisitive cash prize of $1250 thanks to TAFE Queensland and in-kind Flying Arts Alliance voucher to the value of $250.

A graphic artist by trade, Kaylene’s decades long career in Queensland eco-tourism development, sales and marketing was cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The hiatus provided the momentum to take her 20-year passion in kiln formed art pieces from a hobby to a career.

Kaylene has sold small art pieces at the local Southern Moreton Bay Markets, and exhibited at local galleries including Russell Island, Macleay Island Arts Centre, Straddievarious and the School House Gallery.

The acquisition of a new larger kiln in 2024 has enabled her creativity to expand to design and exhibit larger pieces like “Under One Sun”.

The increased kiln size has also enabled her to expand workshops from Sandy Beach Studio on Russell Island to Carys Martin’s Ceramics studio on Cleveland.
