ALL SET FOR “MAY ON MACLEAY’ $5000 ANNUAL BOWLS TOURNAMENT AT CLUB MACLEAY An exciting new bowls tournament is going to make its mark in Queensland Bowls. All is readiness for the ‘May on Macleay’ an exciting new singles bowls tournament that is going to bring some of the world’s best bowlers to Macleay Island. The Open Fours tournament is set down for the weekend of May 28 and 29 with fantastic inaugural prize money of $5000 up for grabs. Club Macleay manager Julie Brooks says some of the world’s best lawn bowlers will be coming to the event to be held at the spectacular Macleay Island green. A certain starter will be former Bowls Queensland CEO and former World Singles Champion of Champions, Brett Wilkie, who has indicated he will be bring a ‘team’ of bowlers to the May on Macleay event The May on Macleay tournament will be an Open Fours event for both men and women. “We are determined to make this a major annual event with prize money climbing over time. Already a number of sponsors are supporting the event, with the Friendly Bay Islander a Silver Sponsor. “This is so exciting for the club and our future directions,” Julie said. “Having high profile bowlers coming to our island club for what we want to become an annual event, is just the shot-in-the-arm our island needs and is brilliant news for the island bowls community. “Entries filled extremely quickly and have closed now that we are at full capacity,” Julie Brooks added. Sixteen teams going head-to-head for a prize pool of $5,000. Entries have been received from as far away as Rainbow Beach and Ocean Shores, with teams from Kallangur, Pine Rivers, Windsor, Woodford and Caloundra entering, along with the locals from Russell Island, Cleveland and Macleay Island. Club Macleay board chairman Barry Dench added: “The inaugural ‘May on Macleay’ 2 day bowls tournament is all set to go. “It is a significant boost to the club and sets a positive tone for the year ahead for Club Macleay.” Also, the club is excited thanks to its excellent effort in recently winning the Summer Shield. It puts many club bowlers in the frame-work to do well at the May on Macleay tournament. Also the Club has a great day planned for Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 8. There will be raffles, and prizes and live music by renowned fiddler, David Lee.
