POLICE OPERATION ’AL’ HAS AN IMPACT ON OUR ISLANDS

Islanders may have notice large contingents of police in late November at various passenger ferry terminals and elsewhere on our islands.

No, they weren’t there to arrest someone coming to the island by passenger ferry.

It was all part of a Queensland Police initiative, Operation ‘AL’.

The code name’ AL’  is one of many terms Queensland Police use for various areas of operation.

A spokesperson for the group that was on Russell Island told the Friendly Bay Islander the program was about building and enhancing partnerships to develop new ways of preventing crime, reducing harm, building resilience, and delivering services.

“AL’, and other programs like it, deliver community safety through strong and trusted partnerships and nurturing and strengthening Queensland Police relationships with Queensland communities.

The police teams were noticed at all our islands in late November and at the Redland Bay ferry terminal as well.

One of the officers explained that it was not just about police presence and public relations, but acting in areas where concerns might be raised.

An example was the number of knives carried, particularly by younger people in some parts of Queensland.

Performance indicators that play a part include:

• Satisfaction of people who have had contact with police in the last 12 months;

• Public confidence to contact the police to report domestic and family violence;

• Rate of complaints against police;

• Public perception of police integrity, including police professionalism, trust and confidence in police, police honesty, and fair an d equitable behaviour.

• Some of police contingent on Russell Island.
