STAMPING OUT DANGEROUS AND ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR ACROSS SMB ISLANDS
The SMBI Safe Venues Initiative is a collaborative effort between licensed establishments and police to create a safer environment for patrons, staff, and the community.
A recent island meeting attended by 20 interested parties was chaired by Bay islands Chamber of Commerce President Dan Golin.
An initiative was formulated at the meeting which is designed to address and prevent anti-social behaviour, including incidents of drugs, violence, assault, and disorderly conduct, within licensed establishments.
The goals of the SMBI Safe Venues Initiative include:
• Sharing Data: Licensed establishments will share relevant data, such as incident reports and security camera footage, with law enforcement and other participating venues.
• Immediate Warning of Red Code Incidents: If an incident that constitutes a "red code" occurs (such as a violent altercation or drug-related activity), the establishment involved will immediately notify other venues and law enforcement to prevent further incidents.
• Sharing of Problem Patron Information: Venues will share information about problematic patrons, including names, photos, and any known aliases, to prevent repeat offenders from causing further issues.
• Blanket Ban on High-Degree Incidents: Licensed establishments will agree to a blanket ban on patrons involved in severe incidents (such as serious assaults or drug trafficking), preventing them from entering any participating venue.
• Other Collaborative Measures: The initiative aims to develop additional strategies and protocols through collaboration, such as training for staff and coordination of security efforts.
A draft policy will be developed with input from all participating licensed venues, ensuring that each establishment is fully involved in the decision-making process.
This policy will serve as a framework for promoting safety and cooperation among the SMBI Island community.
By working together, licensed establishments and law enforcement agencies can share valuable information, coordinate responses to incidents, and implement effective strategies to prevent anti-social behaviour.
This initiative also encourages open communication among venues, allowing them to share best practices, identify problem patrons, and establish a united front against unacceptable behaviour.
The SMBI Safe Venues Initiative represents a significant step forward in promoting safety and reducing anti-social behaviour on the SMBI Islands.
