SMBI SPRING GARDEN COMPETITION

ISLAND GARDENS ‘LAUDED’ IN SMBI SPRING GARDEN COMPETITION The SMB Islands Spring Garden Competition has just been held and the winners announced at a special event held at RICARTS on Russell Island. The event this year was organised by Karragarra Island residents Damon Kendrick and Andre Gravett and has been an outstanding event. Judges stated the gardens entries this year were of the the ‘highest standard’ and residents got a chance to see them at a special Open Day held on October 1. Organiser Damon Kendrick added that there were only small differences between the winning gardens. “There are some truly beautiful gardens on our islands, and decision making was extremely difficult for the judges” he said. There were overall winners and category winners on all four SMB Islands. The special ‘timber leaf’ trophies made from Tasmanian Myrtle were presented to the major winners. Grand Champion winner All Islands went to Rachael Cameron and Martin Cox of Macleay Island. They won the $500 first prize provided by Chris McGregor of Bay Islands Property. RESULTS - Grand Champion All Islands: Rachael Cameron and Martin Cox (Macleay Island). Champion Garden Macleay Island: Rachael Cameron and Martin Cox. Champion Garden Lamb Island: Michelle Sprenger. Champion Garden Karragarra Island: Cheryl and Jim Ross. Champion Garden Russell Island: Sandy Kirkby. CATEGORIES - RUSSELL ISLAND: Best new garden, Jenell Reid; Best Traditional Garden, Alice and Paul Bantoft; Best Pocket Garden, Margaret McConnell; Best Edible Garden, Russell Island Community Garden; Best Artistic Garden:, April and Richard Pollard; Best Garden of the Future:, Sandy Kirkby. MACLEAY ISLAND: Best Traditional Garden, Beth Herherington; Best Pocket Garden, Michael Cochrane; Best Edible Garden, Naomi Zaks; Best Artistic Garden, Jasmin Symons; Best Garden of the Future, Rachael Cameron and Martin Cox. KARRAGARRA ISLAND: Best New Garden, Lisa Bonin; Best Traditional Garden, Robyn and Rod Thomas; Best Pocket Garden, Carmel and Marcello DiLeo; Best Edible Garden, Giselle Upton; Best Garden of the Future, Sam Wonders. LAMB ISLAND: Best Traditional Garden, Michelle Sprenger; Best Pocket Garden: Belinda Bayne.
