STORM AND FIRE TIPS

COUNCIL PROVIDES ISLAND FIRST-HAND STORM AND FIRE TIPS Islanders were recently given first-hand information on how to best prepare for bushfires and storms this summer at a special awareness session run by Redland City CounciL. The Rural Fire Service, SES and our island Community Champions were represented along with members of Council’s Disaster Management, Parks and Conservation, Development Control and IndigiScapes teams. Division 5 Councillor Mark Edwards, who attended along with Deputy Mayor and Division 6 Councillor Julie Talty, said the Bushfire and Storm Awareness Session on Russell Island offered islanders a great opportunity to hear presentations about preparing for bushfires and storms from the key agencies involved in local disaster management. “Preparing for the upcoming storm season was a central focus, covering topics such ensuring gutters are cleaned out in advance and how to prepare an evacuation kit just in case it’s needed,” Cr Edwards said. “It is vital that islanders are proactive and take precautions now as being well prepared and having a plan ahead of the event, whether storm, fire or other eventuality, can make all the difference. “Last year’s severe weather events showed us we cannot be complacent. We hope you never need your emergency plan but don’t leave it until you hear there is a storm or fire on the horizon to take action.” To ensure you can be best prepared, go to disaster.redland.qld.gov.au.
