THE BIG PRIZE

‘WOODY’ WINS THE BIG PRIZE IN THE MARA STRANSKY FUND-RAISING SUPA IGA MEGA SHOP!

One of Russell Island’s best known residents, Graeme ‘Woody’ Leifels, has won the special fund-raising raffle to raise funds for Tokyo sailing Olympian, Mara Stransky.

Woody is the long-serving supporter, volunteer and president of the Russell Island Sports Fishing Club.

He has been involved with the club for 14 years and the win proved to be a pleasing surprise.

The $500 prize was donated by the Russell Island Supa IGA, with the Friendly Bay Islander sponsoring the second ($200) and third ($100) prizes in the competition.

All three winners were from Russell Island.

The $200 second prize was won by Michele McCarthy and the third prize by Gary Conroy.

Russell Island Supa IGA manager, Deb Pattison presented the winners with handfuls of $100 Supa IGA bright red Gift Cards.

All funds raised from the competition have been donated to Russell Island Tokyo Olympian Mara Stransky.

Mara could not attend the draw, carried out by Member for Redlands, Kim Richards, or the presentation, due to her pre Olympic sailing commitments.

However, she told The Friendly Bay Islander she was most grateful to all involved for efforts on her behalf, and congratulated the winners.

“It is great to see my home islands making such a contribution to my Olympics campaign,” she said.

All three of the raffle place-getters said they were extremely ‘proud’ of Mara and were pleased to contribute to the raffle that is helping her get to the Olympics.
