THE ISLAND SNAKE AND REPTILE PERSON

ISLAND ARTIS TRISH HARRIS JUST HAPPENS TO BE THE ISLAND SNAKE AND REPTILE PERSON!

Island artist Trish Harris has another amazing attribute.

She loves snakes and reptiles!

So much so, that she is now the Certified Reptile Carer on our islands.

And for your informations, Reptile Certification is separate from Wildlife and Bird certification.

Primarily, you have to like handling snakes of all types.

And, in Australia where we have the most dangerous snakes on the planet, you have to be especially knowledgable and experienced, AND careful!

Anyway, Trish wants to warn islanders that the recent very sudden weather change at this time of year the lizards and snakes are out and about and very active.

“I am getting phone calls with people worried about pythons in their street; and Lizards are being attacked by people walking their dogs off leash.”

Trish wants to get the message out and has asked The Friendly Bay Islander to help.

We live surrounded by bushland, so it is natural for animals and reptiles to be nearby.  Most of the time you don’t see them.

Accidents involving Reptiles and Wildlife are increasing, and islanders need to take care.

Off leash dogs can easily grab a sunbathing snake, turtle or lizard, Duck or Curlew chick, and injure or kill it within seconds, or get bitten by a snake and die themselves.

Reptiles are warming themselves on the roads and crossing to scrub lands to find mates, and are at high risk of being hit by vehicles.

There is a wide variety of snakes on the islands, from the highly venomous Eastern Brown, and Red Belly, to the whipsnake, tree snakes and non venomous python.

Pythons seem to be the most common and, while not venomous, can give a nasty bite and are very strong.

It is normal and natural to come across these critters while out walking or driving. Just give them space and leave them alone.

Trish Harris says to Please be Vigilant!

If you have an issue re reptiles and frogs, such as snakes, lizards and turtles call the Certified Reptile Carer, Trish Harris on Russell Island 0417049853. or leave a message. For Injured Birdlife, such as Curlews, Kookaburras and ducks etc. Call Bella 04019488
