TIME N TIDE MARCH

AN ‘ANGEL’ TO SAVE DIVISION 4!

Long standing Division 4 Councillor Lance Hewlett could be under pressure from young mother Angel Crowden at the March 16 Local Government election for Redland City Council. Cr Hewlett, it seems, has ‘shot himself in the foot’ with his stunning commentary on ferry services to Coochiemudlo Island. The erstwhile councillor amazingly suggests suggests that some ferry services to Coochie could run from Weinam Creek to ‘take pressure off’ Coochie parking at Victoria Point. One island resident put it nicely on facebook with the comment: “That doesn’t make sense. Are you saying that Coochiemudlo Island residents are to be expected to drive to Redland Bay to catch ferries to and from their island homes?” No answer, but here’s one. Weinam Creek is soon to get a parking station that will also house a new major shopping centre. Throw in the parking and crowds from the Redland Bay area that will be attracted to the new shopping centre, plus the ‘guaranteed’ parking and future parking for the SMB Islands, and then add Cr Hewlett’s suggested Coochie parking and, Hey Presto, we have a parking and community nightmare! Well done councillor. He has certainly given impressive young mum Angel Crowden a big stick to belt him with!

SOUNDS OF CYLENCE

Recently we had occasion to visit the Motor Registry office at Cleveland. During the process, we were directed to a station that was ‘manned’ by an attractive young lady with a friendly and helpful disposition. In chatting away, we happened to notice her name tag, that was somewhat crooked hanging around her neck. Being used to reading typeface upside down and back to front from the early days of publishing back in the 1960’s, your erstwhile scribe was able to recognise the word CYLENCE. We were cheeky enough to ask the question: “Is your name Cylence (sounds like Silence!). With a burst of a smile, we were told YES! Cylence the young lady admitted she had ‘imaginative parents’, hence the unusual name. We admitted to her and ourselves that we had never heard of the name Cylence used as a first of second name before. We did a quick search to discover that the only area where it is used is in the naming for an insecticide. We have to say, we much prefer the Cylence version at the Motor Registry office. Great meeting you Cylence!

STUDENT FERRY BEHAVIOUR

The Friendly Bay Islander tells the story inside about students who use our passenger ferries, behaving badly. So badly, in fact, that we photographed their shenanigans, but did not record their continual foul language. It was a ferry that had fewer students that normal and a heavy representation of island residents. All on board were commenting on the behaviour and the foul language and the excessive use of the ‘F —‘ word. It is behaviour The Friendly Bay Islander has been fighting against for years, and we thought we were succeeding up until now. We contacted the high school the students attend, Victoria Point High School, and received considerable support. It appears they are well aware of the behaviour of a handful of students who impact the reputation of the rest of the school in a negative way. We were told the students will be accordingly identified at assembly. We hope it has the required impact on them, but you never know! At the same time we contacted SeaLink. They told us our story and behaviour is just one of many complaints that have been received in relation to student behaviour on our ferries. It is apparent in many cases it is the same people using foul language in an aggressive way. We were also told that behaviour on our ferries is addressed in SeaLink regulations. It was suggested that passenger ferry crew can intervene if behavioural regulations are contravened. It will be interesting to see, if implemented, what impact this may have on the perpetrators?
