$706,000 RUSSELL IS GOLD LOTTO WIN
A Russell Island woman is eager to explore the hidden gems of Australia after snagging more than $706,000 in the weekend's Saturday Gold Lotto draw. The Redland resident held one of the seven division one winning entries in Saturday Gold Lotto draw 4495, drawn Saturday 17 August 2024 and looks forward to a total prize of $706,820.87. So far in 2024, there have been five major prize winning entries in the Redland City region, collectively taking home more than $4.29 million in prize money. The chirpy retiree woke up in a panic to the sound of a phone call from lottery officials but was thrilled to learn it was good news about her newfound fortune. “Oh, thank you very much!” she cheered. “It feels good, but I am overwhelmed! You’ve made my day. I don’t know what to say. We’ve won little bits and pieces here and there but nothing close to this! I am all over the place. I can’t comprehend this. I can’t wait to tell my brother today and rub it all in! He’ll be happy. Firstly, I’ll pay off some of my bills, and then I’ll spend a bit on myself. I’ve worked hard all my life and now it’s time to just enjoy life. I’d like to go on a holiday around Australia; see things I’ve never seen. Thank you so much. You’re wonderful!” Her winning marked System 8 entry was purchased at Lucky at Lake Side News, Shop 5 Library Building, High Street, Victoria Point. The winning numbers in Saturday Gold Lotto 4495 on 17 August 2024 were 23, 15, 41, 25, 1 and 3, while the supplementary numbers were 45 and 11.
UPSIZE YOUR BIN!
Recyling is making a huge difference around Australia and around the world. Redland City Council is upping the ante when it comes to recycling and are now offering Redlanders and Islanders the opportunity to ‘upsize’ the size of their recycling bin from 240 litre to 340 litre. There is a cost to the ‘upsize’ of just $30. This is a once-only set-up fee with no on-going costs. It is a small pricxe to pay allowing Redland City Council home owners and occupiers to contribute even more to recycling. If you are a renter, you can appoach your owner and real estate agent about organising the upgrade. According to Redland City Council, this offer is for existing residents only. Terms and conditions appluy. For molre information you can go to Council’s website or phone council on 3829 8999. The team that answer the phones are extremely knowledgable and helpful.
USING PHONES OF THE FERRIES?
Have you heard some of the conversations people have on their phones whilst travelling on our passenger ferries? One pundit made the comment that mobile phone conversationalists, obliverous to their surroundings, should speak a little louder so the ‘skipper’ in the front cabin can also listen in on the chat. Surely phone use on the ferries in such a close environment should be limited to taking a message and ringing the caller back at a later time. NOT yell at the top of your voice so everyone on board can hear some personal stuff that should remain personal!
VISITOR INFO CENTRE ON THE MOVE
Redlands Coast visitor information will be closer to the heart of Cleveland after Redland City Council’s Visitor Information Centre (VIC) relocates from Raby Bay Harbour to Middle Street in September. Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell said the VIC relocation to 50 Middle Street, adjoining Cleveland Library, would draw more residents and visitors into Cleveland’s business and cultural hub. The Visitor Information Centre’s new site will create a hub that facilitates public access to Cleveland-based Council services such as the Customer Service Centre, Library, Redland Art Gallery and Redland Performing Arts Centre. The centre is a great source of information for things to see and do on Redlands Coast, either by speaking with one of Council’s friendly staff or picking up a copy of the new Redlands Coast Visitor Guide. Last financial year the information centre staff served 6760 customers, either in person or via phone and email. The team promotes more than 270 local businesses and experiences and sells locally-produced merchandise. Redland City Council has operated the Visitor Information Centre since August 2012, when it was located at Redlands IndigiScapes Centre. It relocated to Raby Bay Harbour in July 2019. The Visitor Information Centre is open 9am to 4pm daily (except Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Anzac Day, Christmas and Boxing Day).
POOR ISLAND PHONE SIGNALS
If you live in certain areas of our islands, mobile phone coverage can be extremely poor. This is despite that there is a great big Optus Mobile tower located on the northern end of Russell Island. If you happen to live in pockets on eastern side of some of our islands, more than likely your phone signal is terrible. One person on our islands who knows a lot about it is computer tech Travis Place. He admits where he lives on Russell Island his mobile reception is ‘zero’. He says he was amazed when visiting Thailand way out in a jungle area he could get excellent mobile reception, but he can’t get it at his home on Russell Island. “It has everything to do with the positioning of the mobile tower on Russell Island that was built attached to the telephone exchange site, rather than the highest point on the island. If you live in a an area with poor mobile reception, Travis says there is something you can do that may assist. iPhone owners can go to settings and turn on Voice Over Wi Fi Calling. Android phone users can go to settings and select WLAN. Hope this helps.
