KIM’S $95 MILLION EFFORT FOR WEINAM CREEK PARKING A GAME CHANGER!
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Bart Mellish and local Redlands MP, Kim Richards have announced a Miles Labor Government would deliver a total of $95 million in funding to build the Weinam Creek multi-storey carpark, if elected in October.
The Miles Labor Government has already pledged to deliver $15 million to Redland City Council for use on the project and has now committed to deliver the full $95 million required to build a multi-storey carpark.
Following the recent Cabinet meeting in the Redlands led by Premier Steven Miles, the Labor Government has listened and acted on the needs of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands community to secure accessible parking at Weinam Creek.
It has come as a result of ‘considerable lobbying’ by Redlands MP Kim Richards.
This announcement builds on the success of 50 cent public transport fares in Redlands where more than 269,000 people boarded and used services, for only 50 cents, in the first three weeks.
This government has a strong track record delivering public transport infrastructure for the Redlands region.
Premier Miles stated: “Labor committed to providing safe, accessible car parks for residents and visitors of the Southern Moreton Islands who commute using the Redland Bay Marina Ferry Terminal, with separate entry and exit to the retail centre car park.
“The Queensland Labor Government, along with Redland City Council, has invested over $48 million to upgrade of our Southern Moreton Bay Islands ferry terminals, to deliver better accessibility, improved security and passenger amenities, digital timetable information and better berthing.”
Member for Redlands Kim Richards said she was “proud’ to announce a Miles Labor Government would deliver the multi-storey Weinam Creek carpark if elected in October.
“We want locals who rely on the parking facilities at Weinam Creek every day to have access to safe, secure and reliable parking.
“And, if elected in October, only a Miles Labor Government will deliver this critical project for locals of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands.
“I’m proud of what I have delivered for the Redlands, and we have a strong vision for the future of this region.
“We want island residents to be able to get where they’re going quicker, and for less, so islanders can spend more time with the people they love.
“This comes in stark contrast to the LNP, who have forgotten about the Redlands.
“They have promised nothing for our beautiful part of the world and cannot be trusted to do what matters for the Redlands.”
Premier Steven Miles added: “Good governments listen and deliver, and that’s what I’m doing.
“There is no person more passionate about delivering for the Redlands than Kim Richards and she has worked hard to secure this monumental upgrade for her community.
“If elected, this $95 million commitment will deliver safe parking facilities that meet the needs of the community.
“Only a Labor Government will do what matters for the Redlands.”
Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Bart Mellish said a re-elected Miles Government will commit an additional $80 million towards the Weinam Creek development to make sure there is plenty of parking for Island residents.
“We know this is so important to residents, to be able to have secure and safe parking when they come to the mainland.
“We already have $15 million on the table for this development, and because of the strong advocacy of your local member Kim Richards, that has now grown to $95 million.
“This builds on our recent announcement to bring 50 cent fare to Coochiemudlo Island – and I know our other SMBI residents and the whole Redlands community is loving is.”
• Council’s design impression of the Weinam Creek car parking station.
It is a pity that this article makes no mention of 'The Our Parking Spot Group' that has been the main driving force since 2008 in bringing close to conclusion the provision of sufficient and affordable parking at Weinam Creek for Islanders by the building of a multi-level car parking station at Weinam Creek. It has always been emphasised that a 2,000-car parking station, with about 400 car paces external to the station, would suffice until the Islands population reached about 12,000.
It is this Group that caused the Council to be changed during the 2012 Council elections because that Council had stated its intention to reduce the number of parking spaces at Weinam Creek and to make everyone pay…
